Introduction

NEBOSH, National Examination Board in Occupational Health and Safety, is a globally recognized health and safety qualification that is intended for companies or individuals working to international standards with regards to Health and Safety. The NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) covers the principles relating to health and safety, identification and control of workplace hazards, and the practical application of this knowledge.

The NEBOSH International General Certificate course is designed for managers, supervisors, worker representatives, and others who require an understanding of health and safety principles and practices. Candidates looking to complete health and safety courses are likely to be employees of large organizations operating outside the UK, or of multinational companies already working to international standards but who need to adapt these to accord with local needs and practice. This is an Open Book Examination (OBE). Candidates can take the advantage of preparing in their own time and write the exam in a relaxed manner without the pressure of time bound exam pattern.

The aim of this unit is to assess a candidate's ability to complete successfully two activities: To carry out, unaided, a safety inspection of a workplace, identifying the more common hazards, deciding whether they are adequately controlled and, where necessary, suggesting appropriate and cost effective remedial action.

Exam & Certificate

NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) covers the principles relating to health and safety, identification and control of workplace hazards and the practical application of this knowledge.

The IGC syllabus takes a risk management approach based on the best practice and international standards, such as the International Labor Organization (ILO) codese of practice. Local laws and cultural factors may form part of the study program where relevant and appropriate.

NEBOSH IGC qualification is also widely taken as a first step towards a career in health and safety and is accepted by IOSH – the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health – in meeting the academic requirements for Technical Membership of IOSH (Tech IOSH).
The course is split into 2 units which are assessed individually - 1 through a question paper and 1 through a practical assessment.

Open book examination (OBE)

Unit IG1 (Management of health and safety): Question paper – 11 questions (one 20-mark question and ten 8-mark questions)

Unit IG2 (Risk Assessment): Practical assessment

The IGC has two unit assessments; you must achieve a ‘Pass’ in each unit to be awarded the qualification. You will have five years to complete your qualification. The five-year period starts from the date you passed your first successful unit (we call this the ‘declaration date’). Any unit that is five or more years old will not count towards the qualification and you will need to retake this/these unit(s) if you still want to complete the qualification.

Once the Learner Pass both unit exam the certificate will be directly shipped from NEBOSH (UK) to the Learning Partner.
